Again the bird sailed away....

First off pictures later!  This was a story shared by one of our hunting friends.  JR and his brother went hunting on a farm in Missouri.  Not having their own dog the farmer offered his fat, old Brittany.  They arrived at the field and first off let the old dog amble out of the truck.  Well not 5 yards out the dog locked on point.  JR took aim and shot but the pheasant sailed out over the field.  Not too far again the Brittany locked up solid.  The fat bird rose right in front of JR's brother the shot clear and straight but the bird managed to get away.  Again the Brittany froze on point JR shot but elusively the pheasant glided into the distance.  The Brittany slowly turned around headed directly to the truck and loaded herself up.  HAHAHA
OK the difference if you had a Griff is he would come over and try to console you.  Laugh at you good naturedly then head back in.

Skunk 3 Griff 0

OK truthfully the Skunk didn't look like he had had that great of a day.  So what happens when you call 3 Griffons to you after they have all been sprayed by a Skunk?  Well they are joyful of course, this is Griffon Land after all, they want to share their merry experience.  Here is what I am thinking does skunk perfume wear out in 3 weeks?  I swiftly head back in the house shut all windows and doors.  I can  envision Twister whelping room mixed with the acrid twang of Skunk musk.  Just another day in Griff paradise:}

The Handy Man

So we had a guy come work on our house for a bit.  I keep the Griffs in an outside run about 30 foot by 200 feet long during the day when we are at work.  It is fenced with 4 1/2 foot high hogwire and a top pole. Now mind you this is an honorary system.  The dogs can freely jump over and out however our handy man didnt know that.   So the Griffs were not impressed as a whole when this random guy showed up, and they carried on mightily, their rugged good looks might be confused with scary mean dogs.  The handyman tells me he is thinking I can make freinds or because they are safely contained in that kennel I can ignore and walk about like I belong here.  Then he watches as Twister our acrobat easily walks along the top pole.  Then he sees Chrome jump outside the run and jump in the canal get a drink then hop back in.  Next day he brought dog biscuits with him.
Even if the gate is left open the dogs know they are expected to stay in that area until we are home.  It works 97 % of the time.  The other 3% is Griffon clowning around.

Versatility Hunters!

Bird season has ended this past Monday. Of course pheasents were over DEC 30th. This was right before Christmas.  Cade and Chrome took these guys within 5 miles of the house.  Chrome is a confident and fearless hunter, full of 2 year old exuberence, still so much nicer to work with than  the young shorthair we were also working that day.  The 2 dogs had an early squabble then they both turned all about bird business.
Chrome did bump some mule deer and was in hot pursuit.  Remember these guys were bred as versatility hunters.... still after some enthusiastic yelling Chrome affably returned with that Griff Grin that said he was just doing a little jogging.... All in all a great day for everyone.

Labs

CHEWIE  a ROSE Chrome pup.

So I will ramble today.  I sell a lot of Griffons to Labrador People.  I know why... a Lab is a classic hunting dog.  Every country boy either owned one or their Granddad owned one.  They are tied to memories of ducks, and first shotguns, and slobbery kisses.  They are found in every back yard, some well bred, lots just bred.
But there are a few dreamers out there... that imagine there must be other dog breeds out there that fit my life style and that don't bore me to tears.  Griffons are notorious for being a family freindly, athletic, hunting dog.  Though the gene pool isn't as large, our breed has been well protected by breeders who screen hips, health... ability and overall temperment.  A rambunctious look coupled with low maintainance coat.  Comical temperment, thoughtful yet exuberent.  If your gonna dream.... Dream BIG! Christy
