Algernon Plus Faith and Towser MOM and Dad of these available puppies.

Algernon is a little hinting machine, very strong wing reaction, happy fellow with a stylish tail set and natural stack.  His Mom and Dad are supreme hunters both upland and waterfowl.  Algernon is going to have a tight 1 inch outer wire coat when he finished, right now it is shorter than that but the wire will come in over the course of the next 18 months.  Smart as whip and social.

2nd the Rose & Chrome facebook group, is your home base for your Griffon Puppy, filled with each member having already bought and lived through getting an Outback bred Griffon Puppy.  They are full of inspirational pictures, thoughts and tips and tricks that have worked for them.  But mostly it is a place that is not open to the public, that you can feel confident and connected with people that have these great dogs in common.  We are all anxious to see your new puppy, and their new people.  So once you get your puppy if you would post a picture of him or her, post his kennel name as many of our group follow the blog with you, tell us your pup's new name and include his parents ie FAITH AND Towser or Grace and Bandit.  Your puppies full grown sibs or half sibs often reach out to you and it is soooo fun.  Don't feel shy we love our actively posting owners.

Search for Rose & Chrome in your facebook search.  Sorry this is a closed group only for Outback owners and their family that is involved with that puppy.

I have written a new article!

Please see my article at the bottom of the BLOG.  WRITTEN about anxiety and your Griffon.  I am also working madly on a new web page.  That will have updated breeder profiles, as well as the articles more readable and orderly.

The following are some Griffon RULES. but see the article to make sense of it all.

There are rules that will help you raise a brave Griffon

·         I and all the humans in this house are the boss and rank higher than the Griffon.

·          Babies and small children are my friends. They are prized above all other things by my adult owners, so I worship them as well.  I can play gently with them.  I never bite, or jump on them especially the baby though she is super cute.  They can greet me, and talk high because they are babies… I understand that to a degree.

·         Teenagers… or other sub adults must adhere to similar rules as the adult owners.  They are not to teach me to play too rough, or ignore basic rules.  Most Griffons recognize sub adults as being pretty fun.

·         Griffons do not need to make any decisions. Let your rules be clear.  IE Cats are not food…and the like.

·          Griffons leave kids alone leave other animals alone unless I say different

·         Avoid talking in a high voice,or treating your dog like it is a baby.   Your Griffon is a dog not a child.  He takes the high voice in greeting or whatever as some kind of distress,  yours or his.

·         Try petting in an upward movement on the chest instead of the top of the head or back, or scratch a belly. Don’t stare him down in adoration or appreciation, it actually feels dominant to most griffons.

·         Never greet or say goodbye. It is just another day. Wait for the calm after the storm to appreciate your Griff.

·         Put your puppy away lots. In the yard on his mat or kennel, with the neighbor.  He needs to be adjusted there.  If needed add an incentive to keep him there.

·         Get your keys jingle them and happily return, don’t take the dog, unless you want to.  Get in your car come back.  Certainly don’t take your Griffon with you  every time.

·         Everyone has the same rules in the house, no matter who you are. If the dog can’t be on the couch than not ever.

·         Send a member of the household to an obedience class with your puppy. Pick the person that feels the least control over the puppy, your 2nd choice is the person that is vested the most, but your house will run smoother if you pick the first option.

·           Dogs should not be at your level, they are not humans, stay on the floor and off the bed.

·         Scold without penitence, and immediately.

·         Swiftly get over the anger of correction.

·         Walk with a loose lead, if you don’t know how, either YouTube it or get a trainer. Same with biting or jumping.

·         No harnesses, they incite pulling.  If you feel out of control learn to use an ecollar or a pinch collar or a gentle leader.  Used as intended they are excellent training tools.

·         Some dogs need a play collar and a different collar or set up to differentiate from anything goes to your job is to be calm. A backpack etc.  The stuff you see on service dogs is on purpose to let the dog know he is working. Use that tool.

If this article applies to you, save your dog, get a trainer today.  I am here to inspire.  Of late have had several Griffons that have struggled and it is breaking my heart. These rules could save those loads of grief.

Please know I am not picking on any one situation or person, do not take offense, just saying things like they are.

REMEMBER EXERCISE, OBEDIENCE then LOVE

Busy Busy Busy

That would describe your puppies as well:] I hope to have the rest of the pups photographed by tomorrow.  Due to the timing of my upcoming breedings I have to be on the road today to move some dogs around.  Great news at the Vet as all pups came back in perfect health with no anomalies besides the 2 pups with umbilical hernias.  Firefly has a small hernia, that according to the vet will either potentially close as she matures or can be closed at spay, and in any case even left as is, should pose no problem in her lifetime.  As I have noted previously I opted to have MoonShine's closed now, so her new owners will not have that to consider.   It is a very non invasive surgery and should have little impact on her then or after.  Biggest risk is as always anesthesia, so good thoughts for little Moonshine tomorrow morning.

I took some photos yesterday but it was so hot the pups were laying down, so I opted to stop and I took some of the Proud Dad Bandit. The sun was coming down and it was a lovely evening to find some birds. SO enjoy. Very excited to meet you all later this week.

Food

I have worked for several major pet food industries.  There are many good brands.  In general I prefer the larger name brands like Purina, Royal Canin and IAMS, Science Diet, as they have the funds to do long term studies on their foods.  I am not a trend setter,so the newest foods are of no interest to me.  I do know that there is no food at Walmart that I think is good enough.  Keep in mind the big companies try to have a food for every economic bracket. The quality follows.

My suggestion is research your own food and look for independent reviews of the analysis.  I like Diamond Puppy as it is free of food colors, naturally preserved, smells good and adulat and puppy both like the food.   ranks as a good representative of a puppy diet.  I start them on regular Diamond puppy then switch to Diamond large breed to slow growth.  I have also had good success with the Salmon and brown rice diet that Purina has if your puppy is not settled with the Diamond/  My advice find something that you can easily source and is compatable with the digestive tract of your own puppy who is an individual.

I have always fed twice a day early and early afternoon.  As much as they can eat then when it is gone it is gone.  I treat for training anytime I want all day long. Provide cold water except a couple hours prior to bed time.

I will provide a transition sack or you may purchase a 40# bag from me.  I will buy it 1 week from today.  Haven't checked pricing lately but hopefully 40 will cover it or be close, petfood is on the rise as is everything else.  Send me an email Thanks

Toys / Grooming

Mars Coat King Dematting Undercoat Grooming Rake Stripper Tool for Dogs and Cats, Stainless Steel with Wooden Handle, Made in Germany This is what everyone uses in lue of a clipper.  Ir thins the coat. The more you comb the thinnner it gets.

Coastal Pet - Safari - Dog Dematting Comb This is a useful comb for cutting through a thick coat to break it up.  Also nice for burr removal.   Mostly overkill for for tight or tight medium coats.

FYNIGO Dog Comb and Cat Comb for Long and Short hair,Pet Grooming Tool for Removing Tangles Knots and Matted Fur,Wide and Narrow Tooth Design,Pet Comb with Stainless Steel Teeth and Non-Slip Handle This comb is my favorite for generally all the Griffons.

USA-Made Comb for Dog, Horse and Cat Grooming

For those of you getting a medium coated pup or more these expensive combs make pulling through the coat a snap.

KONG - Ball with Hole - Durable Rubber, Fetch Toy The small is perfect for your puppies now hard and rubber with a treat hole for teaching fetch.  MEDIUM Large suits them perfectly in about 4 weeks when they are putting in their adult teeth.  These are the balls also recommended for base narrow.  The thin jaw.

Goughnuts Virtually Indestructible Ring Durable Dog Chew Toy - Guaranteed for Life - Strong, Tough Rubber Chewing Toy for Large & Aggressive Power Chewers Like Pitbulls, German Shepherds, and Labs. these are great for your adult sub adult puppies that really like to destroy or play hard.

Hypoallergenic and Grooming your Griffon

The puppies are just developing coat now.... coat length.  I give you my opinion of the length and I will adjust that opinion as I see fit next picture day.  This is a general categorization of coat lengths.  Not sanctioned by anyone except me.

  • Tight Approximate 1 inch adult coat Examples are Faith and Brave.  The tight coated pups have very sparse coats and take as much as 3 years to finish with the coat we know as properly harsh, wiry texture with the under coat. Grooming monthly or so takes 10 minutes.
    Faith

  • Medium tight still tight but a little more than tight Bandit. Grooming mothly or so takes 15 minutes
    Bandit

  • Medium  2 inch The majority of our dogs including Chrome, Charity, Towser. Grooming every 3 weeks or so takes 20 minutes
    Towser

  • Medium fluff  Justice, Liberty, Grace, Chapel Grooming every 2 weeks takes 30 minutes
    Justice

  • Fluff 3 inch Hope, Rolo, Hazel, Jethro Grooming every 10 days takes an hour or more if you wait longer.
    Hope

  • Super Fluff Max 3 hours if he is matted He should be groomed every week.
    MAX

Griffon Coats require regular "pulling".  The undercoat binds the outer dead coat hairs to the skin in small or if neglected, big dread locks.  Taking a SS tooth comb to the skin and tugging the under coat out will release dead hair and dander.  This is where all the hype of being "hypoallergenic" comes in.  First off allergies are usually from the dander or saliva of the dog.  When dead hair is literally floating through the air think Labradors or Goldens.  You can see gently swirling clouds of loose dog hair, they are packed with dander and sometimes saliva remnants.  Let alone the hair on your person or the chair or upholstery.
Every dog even poodles...Doodles...and the like have dander, but when it is not lofted into the environment it is much easier to deal with in your home.  Other strategies with people that deal with dog allergies is
  • Restrict dog from certain living spaces where the afflicted human sits or sleeps.
  • Possibly restrict dog from carpeted areas.
  • Afflicted human should not be in charge of grooming or bathing.
  • 7-10 day baths will remove a lot of dander from the coat and there are shampoos that can be used that will not dry the dogs skin. ie dont use baby shampoo... use a gentle dog shampoo.
  • no dogs on furniture.
  • there is a spray that you can apply to the coat that basically wipes away dander.  For someone who desperately wants interaction but is deathly allergic.
Baby Griffon coat comes in soft, and can look somewhat yellow and fuzzy before it is replaced with adult coat.  So your longer coated dogs appear softer than you imagined in the first year to 18 months.  Their coat starts looking pretty good around 2 but is better at the age of 3.  Your tighter coated dogs just look like they were shorted period.  But given time it comes in like it should.  Patches and baldness seen through to skin is common.  Do not let your Vet think it is a thyroid issue or skin issue.  Just give it 3 months, the under coat will be replaced it takes some time.  They can shed at the darndest times..sometimes the middle of winter... I have not noticed Rhyme or reason.  Good quality food does improve the coat. EFA can be added if necceasary V6 EFA are famous for coat quality.
Longer coated dogs can be managed with thinning tools like a MARS Coat King, and a Safari Matt Cutter, as well as your SS tooth comb.  The trimming of face outside of show standards is personal preference.  I got the dogs because of facial furnishings, I am not about to cut them off.
I almost never use a clipper, but should you take your Griffon to a groomer, they will get that tool out as they believe every dog is a Doodle and should be shaved.  If your Griffon is shaved the under coat is the only thing that will grow back in until they naturally shed.  Which will mean the regrowth areas will look like a fuzzy yellow brillo pad, until this too will naturally fall out and be replaced with normal coat.  but yes... It will grow back.  Your groomer should be asked to hand pull the coat... it will cost more as it takes more time than a clipper.
